You may not have noticed your gum disease symptoms at first. Starting subtly, symptoms can grow worse and permanently damage your smile before you realize you’re experiencing an issue. Permanent damage can occur including tooth loss and jawbone deterioration. What’s more, the bacteria from untreated gum disease can travel through your bloodstream and compromise your major organs, leading to strokes, heart attacks, and diabetes among other conditions. Advanced gum disease calls for advanced treatment, and Dr. Jack O’Neill provides just that right here in our Shreveport, LA office. As an accomplished and board-certified periodontist, he’s able to provide effective gum disease treatment, including osseous surgery for advanced stages of gum disease. This is a proven way to rid your mouth of infection and return you to optimal oral health.
Through osseous surgery, sometimes called flap surgery, Dr. O’Neill can clear away gum disease-related bacteria and any diseased tissue that cannot be treated. After making you comfortable with one of our sedation options, he retracts your infected gums to access your tooth roots and jawbone. He then removes any calculus or tartar that has built up on the roots and bone. Any bone that has decayed will be reshaped and might also be rebuilt through bone grafting. Dr. O’Neill may also remove some portions of diseased tissue. After the area has been completely sanitized, he’ll suture your gums back around your teeth to allow them to heal. For a minimally invasive alternative to osseous surgery, Dr. O’Neill can use laser therapy (LANAP) to treat your gum disease.
