Dr. Calahan graduated from Louisiana Tech University with a degree in Biology and earned his dental degree from the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry in New Orleans. While at dental school, Dr. Calahan found an interest in Periodontics as the dental specialty which was rooted in preservation of the natural dentition and the mouth’s relationship to the whole body. After graduating from dental school, he completed a post graduate residency program at the University of Texas at San Antonio where he earned his certificate as a specialist in Periodontology and Dental Implantology.
While attending his residency program, Dr. Calahan earned a Masters in Science for his research project titled: Histologic Evaluation of Wound Healing following Ridge Preservation with Cortical, Cancellous and Combined Cortico-Cancellous Freeze-Dried Bone Allograft, A Randomized Controlled Trial. Dr. Calahan was awarded the John F. Prichard Prize for Graduate Research by the Southwest Society of Periodontists in 2017 for the paper’s contributions to the field of periodontal research. The purpose of the study was to assess the outcomes of different types of bone graft materials used in a procedure called ridge preservation whereby a bone graft is used to maintain the width and height of the jaw bone following a dental extraction. Maintenance of this width and height is critical for optimal outcomes for the replacement of teeth with dental implants.
Dr. Calahan is active in the local, regional and national dental communities with his memberships as a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, the Southwest Society of Periodontists, the Northwest Louisiana Dental Association.
