Meet Dr. Blaine G. Calahan

Dr. Blaine G. Calahan

Dr. Calahan is a native of Shreveport, LA. He was born the son of a Caddo  Parish school teacher and a Veterinarian. Dr. Calahan attended school in  the Caddo Parish school system and graduated from Caddo Magnet High  School in 2004. During his youth, Dr. Calahan was a member of the Boy  Scouts, Troop 18 in Betty Virginia Park where he earned his Eagle Scout  Award in 2004. Dr. Calahan attributes his time in the Boy Scouts for his  continued love of being outside, staying active and doing hard things.

Dr. Calahan graduated from Louisiana Tech University with a degree in  Biology and earned his dental degree from the Louisiana State University  School of Dentistry in New Orleans. While at dental school, Dr. Calahan  found an interest in Periodontics as the dental specialty which was rooted  in preservation of the natural dentition and the mouth’s relationship to the  whole body. After graduating from dental school, he completed a post  graduate residency program at the University of Texas at San Antonio  where he earned his certificate as a specialist in Periodontology and Dental  Implantology.

While attending his residency program, Dr. Calahan earned a Masters in  Science for his research project titled: Histologic Evaluation of Wound  Healing following Ridge Preservation with Cortical, Cancellous and  Combined Cortico-Cancellous Freeze-Dried Bone Allograft, A Randomized  Controlled Trial. Dr. Calahan was awarded the John F. Prichard Prize for  Graduate Research by the Southwest Society of Periodontists in 2017 for  the paper’s contributions to the field of periodontal research. The purpose  of the study was to assess the outcomes of different types of bone graft  materials used in a procedure called ridge preservation whereby a bone  graft is used to maintain the width and height of the jaw bone following a  dental extraction. Maintenance of this width and height is critical for  optimal outcomes for the replacement of teeth with dental implants.

Dr. Calahan is active in the local, regional and national dental communities  with his memberships as a Diplomate of the American Board of  Periodontology, the Southwest Society of Periodontists, the Northwest  Louisiana Dental Association. Dr. Calahan is a past president of the  Northwest Louisiana Dental Association. He works hard to stay at the  leading edge of contemporary periodontal and dental implant care. He  often travels to seek the highest quality continuing education events each  year and is also an advisor to the local Seattle Study Club affiliate known  as the Dental Advancement and Leadership Study Club.

Dr. Calahan is a husband, a father of three and an active member at the  Noel United Methodist Church in Shreveport.
